Fireworks were regular entertainments at pleasure gardens of the 18th century. They were usually the grand finale following a concert and a burletta. On the 11th September 1770, Mr Clitherow fireworker from Ranelagh Gardens organised the fireworks at Marybone Gardens. A description of his programme appeared in the Public Advertiser on the 7th September 1770 and illustrated the extent of the firework extravaganza:
